On a sparkling evening at Patina, UQ celebrated the incredible contributions of its student mentors and volunteers in 2025. With over 306 mentors supporting 2,591 students and more than 2,420 volunteer hours logged this year, the event was a heartfelt thank you to those who give their time to uplift others.
Themed “Stay Golden,” the celebration glowed with warm lighting, live music, and a joyful atmosphere. Guests enjoyed drinks and canapés while mingling across faculties, reconnecting with friends, and meeting new faces from the mentoring and volunteering communities. A photobooth added extra sparkle to the night, capturing golden memories for all.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the inaugural Spirit of Service Awards, honouring eight outstanding students for their dedication and impact. The awards were presented by Professor Suzanne Le Mire, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education and Student Experience), who acknowledged the recipients’ inspiring commitment to service and community.
Two lucky door prize winners took home special hampers, and every guest received a gift bag as a token of appreciation from the University– recognising the invaluable role mentors and volunteers play in shaping the UQ experience.
The celebration also served as a launchpad for future involvement. UQ’s Get Set Mentoring Program connects new students with experienced peers to help them navigate their first semester, build friendships, and feel supported from day one. Mentors lead weekly meetups, share tips, and create a welcoming environment that makes a real difference.
Meanwhile, the Get Involved Volunteering Program offers flexible opportunities for students to contribute to campus life– whether through event facilitation, promoting student wellbeing, or supporting community initiatives. Volunteers gain valuable skills, boost their employability, and make meaningful connections while giving back.
If you’re looking to make an impact, develop leadership skills, and be part of next year’s celebration, express your interest or register now in UQ’s mentoring and volunteering programs. Whether you’re a new student or a seasoned leader, there’s a place for you.
