“Can God forgive us for what we’ve done to this world?”

Paul Schrader’s First Reformed (2017) is a harrowing portrayal of existential dread and environmental catastrophe. Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a pastor in the upstate New York church ‘First Reformed’, whose chance encounter with a radical environmental activist (Phillip Ettinger) and his pregnant wife (Amanda Seyfried), irrevocably alters his perception of his faith and his morality. A distressingly timely film, with one of Ethan Hawke’s finest performances. If you’re interested – we’ll be holding a Friday night viewing of the film at 7:30 pm, with a Zoom meeting beforehand at 7:15 pm. Due to copyright restrictions we cannot link directly to the film, but you can locate it by searching in the UQ Library catalogue.

Content warning: the film’s depiction of suicide, as well as it’s over all atmosphere of fatalism, may be distressing to members, so please keep this in mind.
