Learn how to make a traditional Pacific Flower Crown, or Pare Ei, with UQSPIA.

An ‘ei katu or pare ‘ei is a garland of flowers worn around the head that is traditional to the Cook Island, Tahitian and Hawaiian cultures. The word ‘ei in Cook Island Maori translates to something that you create to be worn around your head, neck or hips using shells, flowers or leaves. ‘Katu’ in Cook Island Maori means head, skull or scalp. In ancient times ’ei were fashioned from many different materials including shells, hair, feathers and flowers. It is customary to greet your family or friends arriving on the island with an ei kaki, made from tiare teina. It is an old tradition to give an ei poreo (shell necklace) to someone you are bidding farewell to. But in many celebrations and at special events, or even to wear casually, men and women alike adorn ei katu.

About World Indigenous Peoples Day 2020

World Indigenous Peoples Day (9 August) was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1994, to be celebrated every year during the first International Decade of the World's Indigenous People (1995 – 2004).

Join the UQ community in celebrating both the traditional and modern experiences of Indigenous cultures from around the world.

On this day, people from around the world are encouraged to spread the UN’s message on the protection and promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples.

UQLife is partnering with Student Associations, UQ South Pacific Islander Association and UQ African Students Association, along with community partners to bring you a program of performances, workshops and delicacies throughout the day.

Registrations are essential for all workshops and places are strictly limited.
