Both research and anecdotal evidence indicate that many PhD students experience high levels of stress during their candidature.  Furthermore, recent large-scale international studies indicate that the prevalence of mental health issues in students is far higher than in the general population.  Many factors contribute to poor well-being among students, including intense pressure to publish, a competitive academic environment, financial concerns, and job uncertainty.  At this session, four PhD students will share how they have coped with challenging events and describe their experiences reaching out for help.  They will also share how they have supported fellow students and offer tips to assist others who may be struggling.
Host: Marissa Edwards
Panellists: Nataya Branjerdporn, Kenneth Tryggestad, Antje Martins and Amy Chan.

About R U OK? Day 2020

R U OK? Day is a national day of action where everyone is encouraged to check in with those around us and simply ask ‘Are you OK?’. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, highlighting now more than ever, how important it is to stay connected with each other. This year for R U OK?Day, UQ Life in partnership with the Student Services Counselling team have a program of online and on campus workshops and activities aimed at encouraging meaningful conversations with those around you and providing opportunities to learn how to support others who are struggling and continue a conversation when someone says they’re not OK.

Share your story

By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help a fellow student, family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not ok, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. At the R U OK? Day Convo Corner we will support with facilitating the conversation and providing a platform for sharing stories. Simple steps could change a life!
