About Diwali Celebration 2022

UQ Wellbeing in partnership with the UQ Indian Student Club invites you to a special event to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights on 24 October from 5-7 pm at the Great Court at the St Lucia campus and from 5-8 pm at the Central Walkway at the Gatton Campus.

All members of the UQ Community are invited to come along to enjoy the Diwali experience with traditional Indian food, live entertainment, workshops and activities! We invite you to wear your traditional dress to this event.

What is Diwali?

The Festival of lights has many terms including Deepavali, Dipavali, Dewali, Deepawali. In Sanskrit, the word Deepavali translates to ‘a row of lights’, and this is a term more commonly used by South Indians to refer to the festival. In contrast, the North Indians use the modified ‘Diwali’.  Although the legends that go with the festival are different in different parts of India. However, Hindus, Jains, Newar Buddhists and Sikhs all celebrate the spiritual victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

UQ acknowledges and thanks Allianz Care Australia for supporting this project.
