UQ Outreach Program Offerings
The UQ Outreach program offers 12 different sessions, each specifically tailored to the needs of each grade from 7 - 12.
Traditionally, our team is in contact with each school grade at least twice a year, providing a consistent relationship over a students entire high school career.
Each Workshop (W)/Presentation (P)/On-Campus experience is an important milestone in a students life, a brief outline of each can be seen below:
Year 7
School Skills (W)
- An understanding of the impacts of both positive and negative experiences
- Strategies to cope with negative emotions and experiences
- Problem-solving skills
- How to make the most of their high school journey
Warning! Confusion Ahead (P)
- Learning the importance of confusion for growth.
- Introducing students to strategies for self-regulated learning.
- Strategies to harness confusion for learning.
Year 8
Bouncing Back (W)
developing awareness of their personal stressors and symptoms, and implementing techniques to manage their stress more effectively.
- Increased understanding of resilience
- How to apply solution-focused thinking to a situation
- Strategies for positive thinking and self-care.
Discover Uni (P)
- The knowledge of the differences between high school and university
- The benefits of tertiary education
- The Ability to make informed decisions about future study and career options
Year 9
SET for Success (W)
- The ability to identify subjects they may be interested in for senior school
- Increased awareness of different careers that align with their interests
- Realisation of the importance of selecting the right subject combination to meet future goals
Finding Your Future (P)
- Knowing the difference between a job and career
- Knowing the benefits and disadvantages of going into either the workforce, TAFE or University
- Tips on how to tackle years 10, 11 and 12
Year 10
Know Your Strength (W)
Know Your Strength prompts students to consider potential career paths that they may like to pursue after high school. Students are encouraged to use self-reflection techniques, discuss factors that may influence their career decisions, and identify prospective career opportunities that align with their interests, skills and values.
Students Gain:
- Potential study and career options suited to their skills and values
- How to research prospective careers and identify steps towards their future career path
"A Day in The Life" - Experience Day
Our Year 10 university experience day demystifies university and provides students with information and first-hand insight into entry requirements, pathways and career outcomes arising from tertiary study.
Students Participate in:
- Campus Exploration
- Familiarisation with university terminology and career possibilities arising from university study
- Hands-on, interactive and fun activities with study and career opportunities within two different study areas.
Year 11
Strive to Thrive (W)
- Increased understanding of what stress is and how it impacts people
- Practical strategies to reduce stress during senior studies
- Time-management strategies
- Self-care strategies
Making Your Move (P)
Making Your Move will arm students with practical knowledge and a step-by-step process on what to do after finishing high school for independant living. The presentation involves budgeting activities to give students a hands-on example of planning their income and expenses after school.
Students Gain:
- Details of possible income and expenses, including pathways specific categories
- Skills to budget effectively in their own lives
- Understanding of the support services available
Year 12
Year 12 Mentoring Session (W)
The Year 12 Mentoring Program will be an informal opportunity for group discussion, led by the UQ Student Ambassadors. Students will be encouraged to bring along any questions they have for their student ambassadors. There is one touchpoint scheduled each term with each session covering different topics.
Students Gain:
- Term 1 - Resume and network building
- Term 2 - Budgeting, accomodation, scholarship & broader adult life guidance
- Term 3 - Valuable knowledge around QTAC, alternate pathways and study options
- Term 4 - Self-directed student session catering to specific needs
Keys to QTAC (P)
Keys to QTAC provides students with practical information about applying to university. The presentation includes important information and dates regarding QTAC applications and university enrolment processes, as well as upgrading and alternative pathway options and student support services available.
Students Gain:
- Details of important QTAC application dates
- Information around alternative pathways into university
- QTAC preferencing practice
- Tips for navigating the QTAC process
