About Me

Hi there! This is Persimmon. Please feel free to call me Percy if that's easier.

Though it may be unusual or even awkward to many, I'm incredibly proud of my name, because I earned it through effort and intention. In July 2025, after living in Queensland for 12 months, I successfully changed my legal name at the Brisbane BDM Registry, formalising my English name, which the Chinese Consulate wouldn’t recognise, and switching the transcription of my Chinese name from Mandarin to Teochew, my cultural language that’s sadly at risk of fading away. Witnessing Australia’s journey of reconciliation has deeply moved me, and I’m inspired by the resilience and wisdom of Indigenous Peoples who continue to preserve their heritage and connection to Country.

Growing up gay in a homophobic country taught me the importance of inclusion and empathy. Experiencing bullying and racial discrimination further showed me how crucial safety and support are to one’s wellbeing. At the same time, just like with a typical Chinese face, I’m often “represented” by assumptions and stereotypes that don’t really reflect who I am, I know I can never truly represent every student, even those with similar backgrounds, and that’s why I approach this role with humility, seeking understanding through genuine connection, curiosity, and respect.

I'm actively making my life in Australia, and I’ve been enjoying it so far. I hope you’ll find joy and belonging in your journey here too.
