About Diwali Celebration 2023

UQ Wellbeing in partnership with UQ Gatton International Students Association (UQ GISA), UQU International Collective (UQ IC), UQ Indian Student Club (UQ ISC) and UQ International Students Society (UQ ISS) invites you to a special event to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights on 30 October from 5-7pm at the Foundation Building at Gatton campus and 1 November from 5-8pm at the Great Court at St Lucia campus.

All members of the UQ Community are invited to come along to enjoy the Diwali experience with traditional Indian food, live entertainment, workshops and activities! We invite you to wear your traditional dress to this event.

What is Diwali?

The Festival of Lights has many terms including Deepavali, Dipavali, Dewali, Deepawali. In Sanskrit, the word Deepavali translates to ‘a row of lights’, and this is a term more commonly used by South Indians to refer to the festival. In contrast, the North Indians use the modified ‘Diwali’. The legends that go with the festival are also different in different parts of India. However, Hindus, Jains, Newar Buddhists and Sikhs all celebrate the spiritual victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

UQ acknowledges and thanks Allianz Care Australia for supporting this project.
