What is NAIDOC?

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year's theme is "For Our Elders". Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. It is through their influence and learnings that we must ensure that when it comes to future decision-making for our people, there is nothing about us - without us.

NAIDOC Celebration at UQ is an opportunity for the UQ Community to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

NAIDOC at Gatton

NAIDOC Celebrations are coming to Gatton! Join us at Central Walkway enjoy live music by ELEEA, food, cultural workshops and more.

Aunty Jeannine Smith will be holding a Cultural Weaving Workshop so come have a yarn with your peers and enrich yourself with more cultural knowledge while weaving special mementos to bring home for yourself or gift to others.

Plus, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) will be hosting their book swap stall as well, so bring along books you'd like to exchange for a new find! You will be helping to provide books and learning resources to children living in remote Communities across Australia, and to celebrate reading locally, learn more about Indigenous languages and culture, and raise funds for a great cause. All are welcome for this free walk-in event, so grab your peers and we can't wait to see you there!
