About Me

Hello everyone! My name is Nirin, and I’m a first-year Master of Applied Linguistics student. Although I was born and raised in Australia, I am from a multicultural background as both of my parents are of mixed heritage. I am also multilingual and can speak a total of five languages including English, Korean, Lao, Mandarin Chinese, and Thai. My hobbies consist of learning languages, reading, volunteering, and travelling. I have travelled to over 10 countries and enjoy learning about different cultures and interacting with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.

I applied to be a member of the UQ Wellbeing Student Advisory group because I want to help create a sense of belonging within UQ for students from diverse backgrounds and gain a better understanding of their interests and needs to improve their student experience and the current support systems at UQ. Moreover, I wanted to join a group that aims to better understand, foster, and support the health and wellbeing of students from diverse backgrounds as well as improve various health and wellbeing aspects such as community and cultural connections, mental health, healthy relationships and reproductive health, and nutritional and physical health.

Aside from being a UQ Wellbeing health student advisory group member, I am also a UQ Life volunteer, a UQ Korean International Students' Society (UQKISS) member, and the social media director for the UQ Thai Students' Association (UQTSA). Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like to discuss any personal issues or have any concerns regarding community and cultural connections and/or mental health issues. As a postgraduate student who has attended UQ since 2019, I am also more than happy to offer advice and answer any questions about student life at UQ!
